Straits Times: Two opposition parties to merge

TWO opposition parties, the Singapore United Front (SUF) and the Workers’ Party (WP) are to merge to contest the next general election.

SUF secretary-general Seow Khee Leng said his party was dissolving to join the WP because he felt all opposition parties should fight the PAP under one banner.

He said the introduction of the Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs) under the Team MP electoral system would make the opposition parties’ efforts to get into Parliament more difficult.

He hoped other opposition parties would follow suit and said that two or three others had already indicated interest.

News of the merger was announced on Saturday night at Queenstown Sports Complex at a WP rally held to discuss the Team MP issue.

Mr Seow, who left WP as its assistant secretary-general in 1972 to form SUF in 1973, said the merger was decided on a few months ago.

His party’s 500 members will become WP members on about three weeks’ time, he said.
