Straits Times: The Singapore sell-out – by Marshall

MR. DAVID MARSHALL, the Workers’ Party candidate for the Anson by-election, said tonight Prime Minister, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, was in partnership with Tun Lim Yew Hock, chairman of the Singapore Alliance of the SPA-UMNO-MCA-MIC, in “selling out” Singapore to Federation.

Each State would have the same powers to govern internally and with special powers reserved to the central State to make equal laws in respect of inter-State commerce, taxation, defence, foreign affairs and allied subjects.

‘First colony’

“The so-called confederation is merely continued imperialism – imperialism of the Federation with Singapore as its first colony,” he said.

Very difficult

“How can they want confederation, which means that Singapore has equality with the Federation, when they don’t even want us as one of the States?” he asked.
