Singapore Standard: Crackers herald in a new party

Marshall Attacks Govt.

THE FIRING of crackers and shouts of Merdeka heralded the birth of the new Workers Party at a meeting held at the Hokkien Association Hall in Telok Ayer Street, Singapore, yesterday.

The new party is pledged to work for the “Three-fold principle of Merdeka, parliamentary democracy and socialism.”

The party will have a 30-man executive committee consisting of 20 trade unionists and 10 non-trade unionists. The meeting elected 27 members on the spot and three will be co-opted soon.

Supporting the motion to form the new party, Mr. David Marshall, who was elected chairman of the meeting, said:

“This is perhaps the last chance for many years for the workers and people of Singapore to seek strength in union in a truly nationalist party.”
